Class size (ages 14+): 8.

Learn to make lace with a tatting needle. You’ll learn the basic stitches, ring and thread and ring and chain tatting, changing colors, split ring tatting and how to read various pattern notations. You’ll be able to use shuttle tatting patterns to do needle tatting. Class projects include trims that can be attached to handkerchiefs and garments, and ornaments that can be starched or glued to note cards.

Homework is required.

Learn Needle Tatting Step-by-Step by Barbara Foster (Paxton, IL: Handy Hands, Inc., 1998) will serve as the textbook. Students may want to purchase the book because it has excellent instructions and illustrations. Or, there are web pages that can serve as the “textbook.”

Students must furnish their own supplies and bring them to the first meeting. The book Learn Needle Tatting Step-by-Step by Barbara Foster is recommended, but not required. Students need a size 5 tatting needle, size 10 crochet cotton, metal crochet hook size 4 or size 5, and scissors. Some of these supplies may be found locally, or see the Handy Hands store at www.hhtatting.com to order supplies.

Leader: Crystal Kitchens, member of Huntsville Fiber Guild.

Macramé knots can be used to make textiles. Knowing a few knots opens up a new world to you. The craft was used by sailors long ago, especially in elaborate or ornamental knotting forms, to decorate anything from knife handles to bottles to parts of ships. We might find it more useful for belts, bags and plant hangers. We’ll complete a project TBD in class. The leader will bring all supplies and equipment for use in class.

The Secrets of Mary Magdalene: The untold story of history's most misunderstood woman
Author
Burstein Dan et al, eds
ISBN
9781593152055
Review
Mary Magdalene was the prostitute who washed Jesus' feet with her tears and dried them with her hair, right? Well, no... she was a supporter and follower of Jesus, the first to see the risen Christ, "apostle of the apostles," and an important figure in early Christianity who was given the harlot reputation by Pope Gregory the Great in 591 AD when he preached that the prostitute and foot-washer were none other than Magdalene. The conflation of Magdalene with the women in other stories in the major gospels was one of several ways this very interesting woman was marginalized by others (men) in the early church. (After 1700+ years of harlotizing her, the Catholic church revised her saints-day readings about 50 years ago from the not-Magdalene stories of women of ill repute to the scriptures of Mary at the tomb). The book is a compilation of interesting information and theories about Mary Magdalene from a variety of Magdalene researchers and writers.  HMCPL Catalog

By far the best book I've read all summer. If you are a Harry Dresden fan and haven't read this book ... do so right now. A nail biting thrill ride from beginning to end ... Jim Butcher did not disappoint.   HMCPL Catalog

J.K. Rowling, under her Galbraith pseudonym, again demonstrates her adroitness at crafting a classic fair-play whodunit in a contemporary setting, peopled with fully realized primary and secondary characters. PI Cormoran Strike, who debuted in 2013's The Cuckoo's Calling, has had a professional renaissance after his success in that book. To spite an uppity client, he accepts Leonora Quine's request to trace her missing husband, novelist Owen Quine. Leonora is pretty sure that Owen is at a writer's retreat, but has hit a dead end trying to get its address. Meanwhile, someone is following Leonora, and excrement is being shoved through her mail slot. Strike begins his search in London's literary circles, aided by his resourceful assistant, Robin Ellacott. He eventually finds a horrifically mutilated Owen, who was killed in a manner apparently copied from a controversial unpublished manuscript. The evolving relationship between Strike and Robin, whose fiancé objects to her choice of work, is realistically portrayed, and Golden Age fans will be delighted by passages that could have been written by John Dickson Carr (e.g., "Turning up his coat collar Strike thought he knew, now, what the meaning was: of a dwarf in a bloody bag, of the horns under the Cutter's cap and, cruelest of all, the attempted drowning").  HMCPL Catalog
